What each tool can and cannot tell us

Testing tools.

A tool is useful only when its result is interpreted correctly. These are the main utilities currently used in storage reviews.

ValiDrive

Purpose: A fast screening scan that samples regions of a USB storage device to check whether the reported capacity appears accessible.

Limit: It is not a substitute for filling the entire drive and reading every test file back. A mismatch is a serious warning, while a pass does not guarantee long-term reliability.

H2testw

Purpose: Writes test files across available storage, then reads them back to identify data loss, corruption, overwritten areas, or aliased memory.

Limit: A full test can take many hours or days on a large, slow drive. The final verification result matters more than changing numbers shown while verification is still running.

CrystalDiskMark

Purpose: Measures sequential and random read and write performance using defined test sizes and repeat counts.

Limit: Benchmark results depend on the computer, USB port, adapter, test settings, free space, temperature, and device behavior. Speed does not establish genuine capacity or long-term reliability.

Practical use tests

Timed file copies, phone connections, cleaning trials, print samples, water use, and other hands-on checks show how a product behaves in an ordinary task. The review states when a result is an observation rather than an instrumented measurement.

Original evidence

When practical, a review links the original report or screenshot so readers can inspect the output. The review also explains why a particular number should or should not be treated as final.
