MAGIC JOHN privacy screen protector: it hid my screen, then got in my way

The privacy filter did its job. But Face ID stopped working for me with this protector installed, and the glass shattered after one short drop.

FIELD TEST / 005

The privacy part worked

I ordered the privacy version because I wanted to make it harder for someone beside me to read my screen. It did that. Seen from an angle, the display was harder to make out. I could tell the protector felt cheaply made, but I would have lived with that if it had worked with the rest of my phone.

Face ID was the dealbreaker

The protector I received had a cutout for the selfie camera, but it did not leave the whole Dynamic Island area open. With it on my phone, Face ID was unusable for me. I use Face ID constantly, so a protector that makes me give that up fails a basic everyday test. I did not isolate which part of the protector caused the problem; this is what happened with my phone and the piece I installed.

One small drop, sharp pieces

Later, I accidentally dropped my phone once, from about a foot above the ground. It landed on the corner of its frame, and the screen protector shattered. I understand that a screen protector may crack while absorbing an impact. What bothered me was how little of a drop it took and the sharp shards it broke into. That did not leave me feeling good about its quality. I have not run a repeatable drop test or compared the force against another brand.

01 / WHAT I SAWPrivacy worked. Face ID did not. One low drop shattered the protector.

These results describe the one protector and phone setup I used.

Looking past the branding

Afterward, I found screen protectors on Alibaba and AliExpress that looked identical to mine for a fraction of the price, apart from the MAGIC JOHN branding on the package. The advertising I saw gave me the impression that the seller had invented or designed this product. Seeing those cheaper lookalikes made me question that pitch and the price. I cannot confirm from appearance alone that they come from the same factory, or establish who originally designed the protector.

My verdict

I would skip this one. The privacy effect was real, but losing Face ID made it impractical for me, and the way it broke after a short drop was disappointing. I would rather shop for a better-made protector locally, including at Walmart, where I can check the fit for my phone and replace it easily if needed. I am not providing a purchase link for the product I tested.

What this review covers

My purchased privacy variant, installed on my own phone; my experience of the viewing angle, Face ID, and one accidental drop from roughly one foot. I did not measure the privacy viewing angle, measure impact resistance, inspect factory records, or verify that visually similar marketplace listings are the same product. Other variants and phone models may behave differently.

Product link: Omitted because I do not recommend the unit I received.
